The Story Behind Florida’s Most Haunted House Will Give You Nightmares

About an hour north of Tampa, on the Nature Coast, sits a rural town called Brooksville. The town has many historic buildings lining old, cobblestone streets, but one local home in particular has caught the attention of paranormal researchers across the country and earned a reputation as possibly the most haunted house in Florida.

The May-Stringer house is a four-story Victorian house, built in 1856. by John May. It seems like this is where the problems began. John May died only two years after the May family moved in. A decade later, his wife, Marena, died giving birth to a daughter she conceived with her new husband, a Confederate soldier named Frank Saxon. Their daughter, Jessie May, died soon after at only three years old. Jessie May is said to be the prominent spirit inhabiting the home, calling for her mother and keeping a careful watch on her dolls that still reside in the home. The May family, and later others, were buried on the property.

The home was then sold to Dr. Sheldon Stringer, who used one of the rooms for his medical practice. It’s rumored that up to 8 different ghosts inhabit the house, including a malevolent spirit that occupies the attic and despises women in particular. The home is now a museum, and there are plenty of stories from staff and volunteers about strange activity. It’s very popular with paranormal investigators and has been featured on the show Ghost Adventures.
